Jogo da Velha

Classic tic-tac-toe, now in dona Celi's living room.

The same 3×3 game, three in a line, drawn on the wall of dona Celi's room. You mark with knitting needles. She marks with a ball of yarn. Kittens cross the rug. The whole match stays on the phone: no account, no room, no internet. Each rematch raises the level, up to 20, and she gets harder to beat.

Dona Celi

She is the “velha” of the game: white hair, a polka-dot dress, a rocking chair. She knits while she waits, throws the needles or the yarn, and celebrates when the match has a winner.

A fair machine

The rules only know the board, whose turn it is, and whether a mark is legal. She asks for that list and picks one. Strength climbs with each rematch. Turning the network off changes nothing.

A lived-in room

The board is on the wall, between the window and the lamp. Kittens fill the rug. They do not mark a square, win, or block a tap on the wall.

A match

From the menu to “Deu velha”

Pick a mark, then play on the wall. Dona Celi knits between turns and throws a ball of yarn on hers. The kittens only keep the room busy.

Mid-match

Needles and yarn balls spread across the wall. The yarn color follows the skein of that match.

Deu velha

All nine squares are full and nobody has three in a line. The draw is counted.

X wins

Three needles on the diagonal. The other marks lift off the wall.

The match never leaves the phone

There is no account and no server. The app applies classic tic-tac-toe itself: a 3×3 board, turns, and three of your own marks in a row, column or diagonal. An occupied square refuses another mark. Nine full squares with no line is a draw, and the screen says “Deu velha”. A finished match takes no more moves. The mark is only a mark: it does not capture, walk, or gain a power. Whoever chose a side starts. “Play again” opens another match and raises the level, up to 20. “Menu” returns to the side choice and clears the score. On-screen copy is Portuguese. English and Spanish live in the same phrase file.
